Dydd Santes Dwynwen
Santes Dwynwen (or Saint Dwynwen) is the Welsh patron saint of lovers and is celebrated on 25th January each year, Wales’ version of Valentine’s Day!
Santes Dwynwen was a 5th century princess who fell in love but her father (King Brychan Brycheinog) arranged a marriage to someone else (don’t you hate it when that happens?!?). Dwynwen was heartbroken & fled into the woods where she was visited by an angel. The angel offered her a potion to help her forget her lover (Maelon) which unfortunately turned him into a block of ice. Not quite what Dwynwen wanted. Luckily God stepped in, & granted her three wishes. She used the first to defrost Maelon, the second to protect true love (for everyone, forever!) and the third to ensure she would never fall in love or have to marry anyone. She lived the rest of her life dedicated to God, becoming a nun on Llanddwyn Island, off the coast of Ynys Mon.
